Original Wilks formula
What are DOTS and Wilks?
Heavier lifters can usually lift more in absolute terms, so powerlifting uses formulas to compare lifters of different sizes. Both DOTS and Wilks multiply your total by a coefficient based on your bodyweight.
Wilks was the standard for decades. DOTS is a newer formula that many federations now use because it treats very light and very heavy lifters more fairly.
What’s a good DOTS score?
As a rough guide, around 300 is a solid intermediate, 400+ is competitive at a local meet, and 500+ is national or international level.
Frequently asked questions
Is DOTS better than Wilks?
DOTS was built on more recent competition data and is fairer at the extremes of bodyweight, which is why many federations switched to it. For mid-weight lifters the two give similar numbers.
Can I use DOTS for a single lift?
The formulas were designed for three-lift totals, but people often apply them to a single lift to compare with friends. Just compare like with like.
